Anti Tin Can Phone

2019
concept, physical computing, construction
A tin can phone where you speak into one end, but a completely different message is delivered on the other end, subverting the analog mechanism we see and also believe is the only one acting in the situation.

What is so satisfying about tin can phones is that you can see the thread carrying analog sound from one can to another (the mechanism) and yet it still seems like magic. Digital communication, on the other hand, is a black box - its mechanism is not so transparent. Our voice could be going out into the ether and a totally different voice could be communicated without our knowing.

The messages are created using a voice synthesizer quoting AIs from sci-fi films (2001 A Space Odyssey, Her, Blader Runner...).
